Fluctuations and Pattern Formation in Fluids with Competing Interactions

چکیده
One of the most interesting phenomena in the soft-matter realm consists in the spontaneous formation of super-molecular structures (microphases) in condition of thermodynamic equilibrium. A simple mechanism responsible for this self-organization or pattern formation is based on the competition between attractive and repulsive forces with different length scales in the microscopic potential, typically, a short-range attraction against a longer-range repulsion. We analyse this problem by simulations in 2D fluids. We find that, as the temperature is lowered, liquid-vapor phase separation is inhibited by the competition between attraction and repulsion, and replaced by a transition to non-homogeneous phases. The structure of the fluid shows well defined signatures of the presence of both intraand inter-cluster correlations. Even when the competition between attraction and repulsion is not so strong as to cause microphase formation, it still induces large density fluctuations in a wide region of the temperature-density plane. In this large-fluctuation regime, pattern formation can be triggered by a weak external modulating field.

Quantum phases and fluctuations in correlated electron systems with frustration and competing interactions are reviewed. In the localized moment case the S=1/2 J1 - J2 - model on a square lattice exhibits a rich phase diagram with magnetic as well as exotic hidden order phases due to the interplay of frustration and quantum fluctuations. Their signature in magnetocaloric quantities and the hig...
متن کاملExperimental Results of Pressure Fluctuations in a Water Conduit Section Due to Formation of Unstable Two-Phase Air-Water Flow
The study of two-phase fluid flow behavior in hydraulic structures such as pressurized flow tunnels, culverts, sewer pipes, junctions and other similar conduits is of great importance. A two-phase mixture flowing in a pipe can exhibit several interfacial geometries such as bubbles, slugs or films, depending on the fluid and hydrodynamic properties of flow. The main variables, giving rise to a v...

متن کاملPetrographic Characteristics and Fluid Inclusion Study of Carbonate Cements in Permian-Triassic Rock Sequence of Southern Iran: an Implication of Rock-fluid Interactions in Carbonate Reservoir Rocks
The study of the carbonate cements in the Permian-Triassic Dalan-Kangan formations resulted in the identification of five stages of calcite and dolomite cementation, which completely or partially occluded pores. Cement types appear to be early isopachous calcite (i; C1-non-luminescence), equant (ii; C2-dull CL), fairly coarse secondary dolomite rhombs (iii; C3-zoning red CL), coarse sparry calc...
متن کاملBidimensional fluid system with competing interactions: spontaneous and induced pattern formation
In this paper we present a study of pattern formation in bidimensional systems with competing short-range attractive and long-range repulsive interactions. The interaction parameters are chosen in such a way to analyse two different situations: the spontaneous pattern formation due to the presence of strong competing interactions on different length scales and the pattern formation as a respons...
